Psalms DAY 12

DAY 12 - God’s Loyal Love

Psalm 107:1-9

Why does God deserve our gratitude?

The Psalm 107 songwriter wastes no time telling us why, v.1, “The LORD is good, his love endures forever.”

Say, “Thank you, God,” because God is good. God who gave us life and breath. God who sustains existence every moment. God who chases after us when we run away from home. God who reasons with us not to do something dumb. That God, the one God, the true God, is good.

Say, “Thank you, God,” because God’s “love endures forever. That word, “love,” is a famous Hebrew word, hesed. But when you look at all the times it’s used to talk about God’s love, it takes on more character. It’s mercy or steadfast love or faithful love or loyal love. It’s God’s love sticking with us over time through thick or thin.

This songwriter has seen God’s loyal love firsthand in his own life and his people, Israel’s, story. V.2-3, “Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.” He’s talking about the Jewish exiles, carted off all over the world. Psalm 106 ended by praying, “Save us, LORD our God, and gather us from the nations…” In other words, God answered their prayers and brought them home. He - and they - witnessed God’s loyal love over time through thick and thin.

REFLECT
When and where have you seen signs of God’s loyal love?

PRAY
Thank you, Lord, for your unfailing love! I trust your loyal love to carry me today. Amen.
